My two cents worth

My name is Brett Bumeter and I’ve been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking for two years now. I started with version 9 and upgraded to version 10 back in August. Version 10 has brought a great deal more accuracy to the program, and even more importantly it gives you faster visual feedback when you’re writing. Or I should say when you’re talking and the writing is magically appearing on the screen in front of you.

These days when I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I typically type about 130 words per minute and then spend a little time editing after I’ve written a document. When I average out the editing time with the actual time I spend writing, it usually works out to somewhere between 90 and 110 words per minute to get the finished document ready.

If I’m writing a shorter document like an e-mail, I can typically write a whole lot faster than if I’m writing a longer document. The decrease in speed typically comes from the fact that I have to think more when I’m writing a longer document unless I’m doing something that is more free flow like a brainstorming session or if I’m trying to write something creatively just to get an idea documented before I go back and structure it or edit it. I do find that the more that I talk, the faster that Dragon NaturallySpeaking will write.

If I constantly write single sentences by speaking them out loud and then take a break or pause, the program tends to slow down mostly because my voice is slowing down. But I can keep my voice talking and keep the thoughts and ideas flowing not only through my brain but out my lips, then it will immediately be transcribed into text on the screen.

In some regards this can sound a little bit like gibberish. So when you learn how to compose with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you have to be careful to think out what it is that you want to say, and then say those things rapidly. This is not a program where you have to enunciate every single word in a slow fashion that is reminiscent of watching some 80s movie about computers gone wild like wargames or something.

So anyway I wanted to share with you this great little video that Owen put together. Owen is a blogger from the Isle of Man that I’ve known for a couple of years now, and he does a great job covering a number of different topics relating to technology. That’s partly because Owen used to be a programmer or developer, and these days he tends to focus on working in web design and building plug-ins and more advanced setups for bloggers and companies looking to move into the social media elements of the world that some of us know today.

Regardless Owen put together a nice little video that shows Dragon NaturallySpeaking working with WordPress, one of the most popular blogging software systems in the world. WordPress is basically a web-based application, and so this also illustrates that Dragon NaturallySpeaking can work very well with web-based applications that accept text entry into a text box.

Of course Dragon NaturallySpeaking can also work very well with Microsoft Word and a number of other different word editors or text editors. You can use it with Microsoft Outlook or express or Google Mail or a number of different e-mail applications as well.

I even use the program with a MP3 voice recorder that I picked up from Sony, and I’m able to record my voice into the recorder and then download MP3 files into my computer for later transcription. The program basically processes the MP3 file as if I am speaking them into the computer. The nice thing about it is that I can have my computer transcribe my files while doing something completely different.

PS This document was approximately 650 words long and took me 5 1/2 minutes to speak-type. It took another couple minutes to review and edit. That means I was able to type this at about 118 words per minute and with editing mixed in it was 87 words per minute! Not bad for sitting back away from my computer relaxing while I write this note.

We had at&t Uverse installed about a month ago. We are very happy with all of it! We bundled all our services. We have our phone, internet and T.V. with them. We use to have Comcast and they all of sudden became really expensive and their customer service is not very good. at&t  has excellent customer service! I have had to call them twice and both times they were awesome. They are super friendly and very helpful. I am very happy with all of their services.

In a taped interview of the Oprah Winfrey Show,  Jennifer Aniston talked about how happy she is for Brad Pitt. Now do you think she honestly means that?  She said, “He’s done some amazing things in the last couple of years. So I just think he’s doing great.”

There are a set of brothers that live in our neighborhood who for the last several months have been cleaning up and selling people’s old junk that they don’t want anymore and selling it on Craig’s list.  The other day I was talking to the kids and told them that we have several things that we would love to try to get rid of.  The biggest item that I am trying to get rid of right now is some glass shelves that are beveled on each side and is a half inch thick.  These shelves go for about $350 a piece if you have them custom made for you.  I told the kids that I am willing to give them half the money they get on Craig’s list if they are willing to handle and deal with everything.  I also told them that we have some furniture and some kids toys and clothes that they could also sell.  The neighborhood kids were excited to see what we had and thought that we could both get some good money out of the deal.  They think they can get anywhere from $400-$600 for all of our items and we will split it in half with them. They told me that I  was very computer savvy and  wondered why I don’t just do it myself  and I explained that I don’t have time to deal with it in my life right now.  I told the boys that if it works out well this time we would maybe have a bedroom set and a refrigerator that we would like them to also sell next month for us.  This is a great way for us to get back a little money on what we paid for these items and put a little money in the boy’s pockets.  This is a great way for us to get rid of the nicer items around my house and I hope it works out.

I am trying to look for a 19″ Rackmount Kit for Cisco 2600 Series Routers.  This consists of two metal arm brackets and a dozen screws.  I have been searching the Internet for a decent price on it and I found several vendors that want it $42 plus shipping and handling.  This is an outrageous price.  I’ve found my local vendor still having the cheapest pricing for Cisco rack mount kit.  He gave me a price of  $19.95 for four of the 19″ Rackmount Kit for Cisco 2600 Series Routers.  This is the type of pricing that seems fair for what it is.  I am amazed to see other companies that can sell it for almost double the price that are still in business.  This recession has got him a lot of poor vendors out of business.  But saying that this one vendor one at $42 shows me that there are people out there that are not smart enough to find a good vendor.  I will save a couple bucks by picking up the package from this vendor on my way home

Madonna has apparently had her sons since October 15th when she and Ritchie announced their divorce. She sent them to London for a week to see their dad. When Rocco saw his dad he yelled “Dad” as loud as he could. Guy threw his coffee on the floor and went running over to his boys. They were all very excited to see each other. I can’t believe the drama that these poor kids are going to have to go through. I hope that Madonna and Guy can be civil for the sake of their children.

Our future President isn’t wasting anytime in finding his new White House Team mates! Today it was announced that Rahm Emanuel, Illinois’ U.S. Congressman, will be the administration’s chief of staff. The LA Times reported that Emanuel served when Bill Clinton was in office and that experience will allow him to guide President-elect Obama on legislative strategy and the workings of the executive branch.

My Husband is a huge Cal Bears fan! This year for Christmas he is hoping for money so he can buy his season tickets for next year. Cal is the only football he watches, so luckily I am not one of those football widows like so many of my girl friends. He really wants me to go to a game with him. So I am  going to go at the end of this month. I am kind of exicted to go. I have become more of a Cal fan over the past 3 seasons. My dad and Uncle have season tickets too. So it will be cool to spend time with them as well.  I know the Cal fans go crazy and are full of spirit! College football is so different than Pro.

My colleague just came up to me and told me he got approved for vacation time at the end of March.  He told me that they were going to do some vacationing in Los Angeles, California.  As soon as he told me they were planning to go to Disneyland for two days I got really jealous.  Because this is one of my most favorite things to do with my little girl and we are desperately trying to figure out how we can come up with the money to take a vacation to Disneyland. This is almost a daily conversation around my household.  My wife thinks we will not be able to afford it this year because we are expecting our son to be born in a couple of months and my wife is not going to work.  Money will be very limited.  I am hoping some way we can come up with a couple thousand  dollars so we can go to Disneyland.  So every time I hear about somebody planning a trip to Disneyland I get so jealous!.  All I can think about is how I can make this happen for us.  I pray every day that a solution will arise and this will come true.  Visiting Disneyland is all about dreams coming true!
